Carpet Styles
The style of a carpet affects its look, feel, & performance
and can be divided into three basic categories: loop, cut
pile, & cut-n-loop.
Loop Carpet
|
All carpet starts out as a loop,
with most styles the tips are sheared off but with this
style the loops remain uncut. It is also called a 'Berber
carpet.' The term 'Berber' came from the Berber Indians
who made highly popular blankets with flecks of color.
The reason it is now often applied to loop carpet is
because of the common use of flecks in its design to
help hide soiling.
|
|
Cut Pile Carpet
|
This style is, by far, the most popular
of the three basic carpet styles. There are also many
types of cut pile carpets including Plushes, Velvets,
Textured Saxonies, California Saxonies, & Friezes.
This is the most popular style because of the high level
of comfort plus, with technology improvements, the high
durability and stain protection.
|
|
Cut-n-Loop Carpet
|
This is where loops are made at different
heights and the higher tips are sheared off creating
a tone-on-tone pattern. Popular patterns include floral,
basket weave, & diamond. However there are many
others such as modern stylized waves & stripes.
If you want a carpet to add a little extra dimension
to your home but are worried about overwhelming the
eye, this is an excellent option.

Carpet Fibers and Construction
Each carpet fiber has its own characteristics that affect
the overall performance, feel, & appearance of a carpet.
The most common are wool, nylon, SmartStrand, polyester, &
olefin.
|
Wool: The
Muse
Wool is what all synthetic carpet fibers strive to become.
It is naturally stain resistant, bug resistant, flame
retardant, water resistant, & easy to clean. It is naturally
resilient because of its natural crimp. And a good wool
rug or carpet can outlast not only you but your children
and probably your grandchildren as well. It is highly
sustainable and has a low carbon footprint (especially
the revered New Zealand Wool, the industry standard
for excellence).
|
|
|
Nylon Fiber
The main characteristics of nylon are excellent resilience
& durability. It is also easier to clean and will
accept stain protection treatments easily. A few examples
of nylon carpets are Tigressa SoftStyle, Wear Dated,
& Stainmaster. New technology, sometimes referred
to as the Soft Revolution, has also enabled the industry
to offer a soft nylon that has a silky soft feel &
some of the best durability & clean-ability available.

SmartStrand Fiber
Recently Mohawk Industries invented a new carpet fiber using
DuPont's Sorona (a renewably sourced polymer) called Triexta
that they now use in their SmartStrand carpets. It has stain
protection engineered into the fiber during the manufacturing
process so it does not need any stain treatments & repels
stains. It is also a very durable fiber.
Polyester Fiber
Polyester resists fading & is able to hold brighter colors
than some of the other synthetics. It is also more inherently
stain resistant than other fibers that are untreated. With
improvements in the manufacturing of polyester fiber that
stemmed from the improvements a part of the 'Soft Revolution,'
polyester has much greater durability than before.
Olefin (Polypropylene) Fiber
This is often used in indoor/outdoor commercial carpet due
to its resistance to water & stains. With olefin, the
fibers are actually dyed with color before they are formed
so the color goes all the way through each fiber.
Carpet Construction
This defines how the fibers are made into a carpet. There
are three basic construction types: woven, tufted, & axminster.
A
woven carpet is created by interweaving yarns on a loom, creating
a tightly joined carpet.
Tufted carpet is created when needles force tufts of fibers
into a pre-woven fabric backing.
About 95% of carpets today are tufted.
A improvement in the manufacturing of tufted carpet uses 'continuous
filament' instead of 'staple' which drastically decreases
shedding.
Axminster is a type of woven carpet where the fibers are woven
directly into the backing creating an extremely durable carpet.
Stain
Protection
The ability of any particular carpet to resist stains begins
with its construction and fiber type. Then manufacturers often
decide to add their own stain resistance treatment at various
times throughout the construction. Some spray it on afterwards,
some include it with the color dye, & still others completely
immersed the fully formed fiber in the protection. Because of
the variety of types of protection & methods of incorporating
the protection in the carpet, be sure to consult with your sales
associate to help choose which is best for your lifestyle.

All of our Titanium carpets have Ultra25 ScotchGuard stain
